GAP IIDTool Land Rover Diagnostic Tools

Advanced Land Rover diagnostics

Understand Your Land Rover Before Replacing Parts

The GAP IIDTool gives Land Rover owners access to detailed fault codes, live vehicle data, service functions, calibrations and advanced configuration from a compatible smartphone or tablet.

Choose the established IIDTool G3 for many earlier Land Rover models, or the DoIP-capable IIDTool G4 for newer vehicles and broader modern coverage.

IIDTool G3

GAP IIDTool G4 Bluetooth and DoIP diagnostic tool for modern Land Rover vehicles

IIDTool G4

Land Rover specific Far deeper vehicle access than a basic generic engine code reader.
Compact and portable Small enough to keep in the glovebox for home, roadside or workshop use.
App-based control Use the IIDControl app on a compatible Apple or Android device.
More than fault codes Live data, outputs, service routines, calibrations and supported configuration.

More Than a Basic Fault Code Reader

Many inexpensive diagnostic readers communicate only with the engine management system and display limited generic fault information. That can be useful, but a modern Land Rover contains many interconnected electronic control modules.

The GAP IIDTool is developed specifically for Land Rover and Range Rover vehicles. Depending on the model and system supported, it can communicate with modules controlling the engine, transmission, ABS, air suspension, airbags, parking brake, body electronics and other vehicle systems.

This deeper access can help you diagnose the cause of a warning message, check live readings before buying parts and perform procedures that would otherwise require specialist diagnostic equipment.

A Useful Tool for:

Land Rover owners
Home mechanics
Enthusiasts
Independent garages
Overland travellers
Multiple-vehicle households

It will not repair a mechanical or electrical fault for you, but it can provide the information and functions needed to diagnose the problem more intelligently.

Which GAP IIDTool Do I Need?

The correct tool depends mainly on your vehicle model, year and whether it uses traditional CAN-bus diagnostics or the newer DoIP communication system.

Established CAN-bus choice

GAP IIDTool G3

GAP IIDTool G3 plugged into a Land Rover OBD diagnostic port

The G3 remains the natural choice for many earlier Land Rover vehicles that use traditional CAN-bus diagnostics and do not require DoIP support.

Common G3 applications include:

Discovery 3

Discovery 4

Freelander 2

Range Rover L322

Range Rover Sport L320

Earlier Range Rover L405 and Sport L494

Earlier Range Rover Evoque and supported Defender L316 models

Compatibility and available functions vary by exact vehicle and model year. Check the product page carefully before ordering.

Modern DoIP and CAN support

GAP IIDTool G4

GAP IIDTool G4 Bluetooth diagnostic interface with DoIP support

The G4 supports newer DoIP-equipped Land Rover vehicles while also supporting a range of earlier CAN-bus models. Some earlier vehicles require the optional OBD adaptor.

Particularly relevant for:

Defender L663

Discovery 5

Range Rover Velar

Later Range Rover L405

Later Range Rover Sport L494

Later Range Rover Evoque

Newer Discovery Sport and other supported DoIP vehicles

The G4 does not support every earlier vehicle. In particular, it is not suitable for the 2002–2009 Range Rover L322 or 2007–2015 Defender L316.

Quick G3 or G4 Guide

Vehicle or requirement Likely choice Important note
Discovery 3 G3 A proven and cost-effective choice for this generation.
Discovery 4 G3 or G4 The G3 is usually the straightforward choice. The G4 requires the optional adaptor.
Freelander 2 G3 Check the exact year and supported functions.
Range Rover L322 2002–2009 G3 The G4 is not compatible, even with the adaptor.
Defender L316 2007–2015 G3 The G4 is not compatible with this vehicle range.
Defender L663 G4 Requires the G4’s modern DoIP capability.
Discovery 5 or Range Rover Velar G4 Designed for the newer vehicle communication system.
Mixed earlier and newer Land Rover vehicles Check carefully The G4 offers wider modern coverage, but it does not support every earlier model.

This is a simplified guide rather than a complete compatibility list. Functions may vary by model, year, engine, control module and vehicle specification.

What Can a GAP IIDTool Do?

Available functions depend on the vehicle and system, but the IIDTool can provide access far beyond basic engine fault-code reading.

Read and clear faults

Access supported control modules rather than only generic engine codes.

View live data

Monitor sensor readings and vehicle values while diagnosing a fault.

Service routines

Output control

Activate supported components manually to assist with fault finding.

Air suspension work

Access supported height adjustments, sensor calibration and related procedures.

Vehicle configuration

Adjust supported vehicle settings and configuration through CCF editing.

Programming functions

Access supported advanced programming and module-related procedures.

Export information

Diagnostics from Your Phone or Tablet

The IIDControl app provides access to supported diagnostic and programming functions through a compatible Apple or Android device.

Depending on the vehicle and selected function, you can navigate individual control modules, read faults, view live information, carry out output tests and perform supported service or calibration routines.

PC and Mac support is also available through GAP’s IIDUpdater software for applicable tool management and update functions.

Standard Diagnostics and VIN-Locked Advanced Functions

One of the most important points to understand is that ordinary diagnostic use and advanced programming are not necessarily treated in the same way.

Standard diagnostic functions

Standard supported diagnostic functions can generally be used on compatible Land Rover vehicles without restricting the tool to only one vehicle.

Advanced programming functions

Advanced functions such as supported programming, configuration and flashing are normally linked to a particular vehicle VIN after activation.

This means an owner may be able to use the tool for standard supported diagnostics on another compatible Land Rover while retaining the advanced VIN-linked functions for their main vehicle. Exact licensing and function availability should always be confirmed from the current GAP information.

Common Reasons Owners Use an IIDTool

Air suspension warning messages
ABS and traction-control faults
Engine management warning lights
Transmission fault messages
Airbag and restraint-system faults
Electronic parking-brake procedures
Steering-angle sensor faults
Battery and communication problems
Service reminder resets
Suspension height calibration
Checking live sensor values
Supported vehicle personalisation

Important G4 accessory

Does Your G4 Need the OBD Adaptor?

Certain earlier CAN-bus vehicles require the optional G4 adaptor. It plugs between the vehicle’s OBD socket and the IIDTool G4 and isolates diagnostic pins 12 and 13. No modification to the vehicle wiring is required.

Vehicles listed as requiring the adaptor include:

Discovery 4 Discovery Sport 2015–2019 Range Rover L405 2014–2016 Evoque L538 2011–2019 Sport L320 2010–2013 Sport L494 2014–2016

The adaptor does not make the G4 compatible with the 2002–2009 Range Rover L322 or 2007–2015 Defender L316.

You normally do not need the adaptor for:

Defender L663

Discovery 5

Range Rover Velar

Later Range Rover L405

Later Range Rover Sport L494

Range Rover Evoque L551

GAP IIDTool Frequently Asked Questions

Is the GAP IIDTool just an engine code reader?

No. Unlike a basic generic OBD reader, the IIDTool is designed for Land Rover vehicles and can access multiple supported vehicle systems, service routines, live data, outputs, calibrations and configuration functions.

Is there a monthly subscription?

The standard IIDTool product is not sold by JGS4x4 as a monthly subscription service. Some specialised GAP services, additional licences or future third-party requirements may be separate, so check the current product and manufacturer information for the functions you intend to use.

Can I use one tool on more than one Land Rover?

Standard supported diagnostic functions can generally be used across compatible vehicles. Advanced programming and configuration functions are normally linked to the activated vehicle VIN.

Will the IIDTool tell me exactly which part to replace?

Not always. Fault codes and live data are diagnostic clues rather than automatic proof that a named component has failed. The results must be interpreted alongside the vehicle symptoms, wiring, mechanical condition and appropriate testing.

Can it calibrate the air suspension?

Supported air-suspension functions can include height adjustment, calibration and related service procedures. Availability depends on the vehicle, system and tool support.

Do I automatically need the G4 because it is newer?

No. For many earlier vehicles, the G3 remains the more straightforward and cost-effective choice. The G4 is essential for newer DoIP models but is not compatible with every earlier Land Rover.

Can I leave the IIDTool permanently connected?

The tool is compact enough to carry in the vehicle, but follow GAP’s current instructions regarding connection, storage, battery condition and long-term use.

Can an activated diagnostic tool be returned?

Diagnostic equipment that has been registered, activated or linked to a vehicle may not be suitable for return unless it is faulty. Check compatibility carefully and contact us before ordering when uncertain.

Choose the Right GAP IIDTool for Your Land Rover

Select the proven G3 for many earlier CAN-bus Land Rover models or the advanced G4 for newer DoIP vehicles and supported earlier applications.

Always check the complete product compatibility information before ordering. Available functions vary by vehicle model, year, specification and control module.
