The Land Rover Discovery 5
The Land Rover Discovery 5 was unveiled in 2016 and reached customers as a 2017 model. It replaced the Discovery 4 with a completely new aluminium-intensive body structure, substantially reduced weight and a more aerodynamic, rounded exterior design.
Although its appearance changed considerably, the Discovery retained several established design features, including the stepped roof, rising rear side-window line and flexible three-row seating. Seven-seat models provide forward-facing seats in all three rows, with the rear seats folding into the load floor.
The L462 combines permanent four-wheel drive, an eight-speed automatic transmission and advanced electronic chassis systems. Depending on model and specification, equipment can include Terrain Response 2, air suspension, All-Terrain Progress Control, surround cameras and Advanced Tow Assist.
Discovery 5 Model Types
Equipment, seating, engines and styling vary between model years and trim levels, so the complete VIN should be used when checking parts.
Earlier vehicles use the original L462 exterior and interior design. UK engine choices included four-cylinder Ingenium diesel engines and the 3.0-litre Td6 V6 diesel, with petrol versions also available in selected years.
The updated model introduced revised lighting, bumpers, cabin controls, Pivi Pro infotainment and newer Ingenium engines, including six-cylinder mild-hybrid diesel and petrol powertrains.
Commercial versions replace the rear passenger area with a large load space and model-specific floor, trim and glazing treatments. Passenger-model interior and seating parts may not be suitable.

The commercial model provided a large, flat load area while retaining the Discovery’s four-wheel-drive, towing and off-road capability. UK versions were offered with selected diesel engines.
Major model-year update
Revised exterior lighting and trim were accompanied by a redesigned centre console, Pivi Pro infotainment and new four- and six-cylinder Ingenium engines. Six-cylinder D250, D300 and P360 models incorporated mild-hybrid technology.

Td4
2.0-litre Td4 Ingenium Diesel
The early four-cylinder Td4 diesel was offered in selected markets and specifications. Its service, fuel, cooling, turbocharger and exhaust components differ from those fitted to the V6 and later six-cylinder engines.
Sd4
2.0-litre Sd4 Ingenium Diesel
The higher-output Sd4 uses a twin-turbocharged four-cylinder Ingenium diesel. Do not assume that all 2.0-litre diesel components are interchangeable between different power outputs or model years.
Td6
3.0-litre Td6 V6 Diesel
Early higher-powered diesel models used the 3.0-litre V6 Td6. This engine belongs to a different family from the later straight-six Ingenium diesels and uses different timing, cooling and fuel-system components.
Sd6
3.0-litre Sd6 V6 Diesel
Selected later pre-update models used a higher-output 3.0-litre V6 diesel carrying the Sd6 designation. Engine parts should be matched by VIN, output and original component number.
D300
3.0-litre Ingenium Diesel MHEV
Updated models introduced D250 and D300 straight-six Ingenium diesels with mild-hybrid technology. These engines are fundamentally different from the earlier 3.0-litre V6 diesel.
P360
Ingenium Petrol Engines
Updated petrol choices included the four-cylinder P300 and six-cylinder P360 mild hybrid. Imported and UK vehicles should be identified carefully because petrol specification varies by year and market.
Discovery 5 Chassis and Vehicle Systems
The correct part may depend on seating, suspension, engine, drivetrain, wheel size, brake specification and the driver assistance systems fitted to the vehicle.
Electronic Air Suspension
Many Discovery 5 models use height-adjustable air suspension with air struts, height sensors, valve blocks, a reservoir and an electric compressor. Components can vary according to model year and chassis specification.
Coil-Spring Suspension

The VIN identifies production details and original specification. Many components are separated by exact VIN breakpoints rather than registration year alone.
Confirm the engine designation
Establish whether the vehicle has a Td4, Sd4, Td6, Sd6, D250, D300, P300, P360 or another market-specific engine. Capacity alone is not sufficient.
Identify early or updated model
The 2021 model-year update changed lighting, bumpers, infotainment, cabin controls and engine availability. Registration date may overlap model-year changes.
Check the suspension
Confirm whether the vehicle uses electronic air suspension or conventional coil springs. Inspect the fitted components rather than relying only on trim level.
Confirm seating and body type
