Land Rover Recommended Oils and Lubricants Guide
Land Rover Recommended Oils and Lubricants Guide
Find recommended engine oils, gearbox lubricants, transmission fluids, transfer-case oils, differential lubricants and approximate capacities for Land Rover and Range Rover vehicles.
Please Check Your Vehicle Information
Important: This information is provided as a general guide only. Always check the owner’s handbook, workshop manual or official technical information for your exact vehicle before selecting or adding any lubricant. Confirm the required grade, specification, capacity and filling procedure for the specific engine, gearbox, transfer box or axle fitted to your vehicle.
Important Capacity Notice
Capacities are approximate and may vary with component type, suffix, modification and the amount of lubricant retained during draining. Always confirm the correct specification and final level for the exact engine, gearbox, transfer box or axle.
How to Use This Lubricant Guide
Land Rover vehicles have used a wide variety of petrol and diesel engines, manual and automatic gearboxes, transfer cases, differentials and steering systems. The lubricant required can vary by model, engine, production year and drivetrain specification.
Start by selecting the correct vehicle family below. Each detailed guide separates vehicles by generation, engine and transmission wherever those differences affect the required grade, specification or approximate capacity.
Always match both the viscosity and the performance specification. An oil labelled 5W-30, 75W-90 or ATF is not automatically suitable simply because the grade looks familiar.

Open Evoque and Velar guideService-Fill and Dry-Fill Capacities
A quoted capacity is a guide to the expected quantity. The correct level-setting procedure remains more important than pouring in a stated amount without checking.
Service Fill
The approximate amount normally required during routine servicing after the oil has drained and the filter has been replaced where applicable.
Dry Fill
The larger amount required when a completely empty or rebuilt engine, gearbox, transmission or axle is filled for the first time.
Final Level Check
The final level may be checked with a dipstick, level plug or temperature-controlled transmission procedure, depending on the component.
Important Vehicle and Component Checks
Similar-looking Land Rover vehicles can use different engines, transmissions or driveline components, particularly around model-year changes.
Confirm the exact model
Identify the model generation rather than relying only on the name Defender, Discovery or Range Rover.
Identify the engine
Confirm the fuel type, engine capacity and engine family, including whether a DPF or hybrid system is fitted.
Check the transmission
Manual and automatic gearboxes can change during production and may require completely different fluids.
Confirm the axle type
Standard, limited-slip and electronically controlled differentials can require different lubricant specifications.
Match the full specification
Check the required grade and standard rather than selecting oil solely because the viscosity looks correct.
Follow the filling procedure
Use the correct temperature, level-plug, dipstick or diagnostic procedure where specified.
