Discovery 1
The original Discovery, identifiable by its angular body, stepped roof and rear alpine windows. The range includes 200Tdi, 300Tdi and V8 petrol models.

Discovery 2
The second-generation Discovery retains the stepped roof but has a longer rear body and distinctive tall rear lights. Available with Td5 diesel and V8 petrol engines.

Discovery 3
A completely redesigned Discovery with a much squarer body, split tailgate and independent suspension. UK models are commonly fitted with the 2.7 TdV6 diesel engine.

An extensively updated version of the Discovery 3 with revised front styling, later engines and upgraded interior and electrical systems. Also known as the LR4 in some markets.

The registration year is usually the quickest way to identify the correct Discovery generation, but vehicles registered close to a model change can overlap. Discovery 3 and Discovery 4 also share the L319 platform code, despite being treated as separate models for parts selection.
