Launched in autumn 1998, the Discovery 2 was a major evolution of the original Discovery and a turning point for Land Rover. Combining rugged capability with improved comfort and refinement, it struck the perfect balance between off-road heritage and family SUV practicality.

What Made the Discovery 2 Special?

Refreshed Styling: A smoother, more modern look while retaining that iconic Land Rover profile.

New TD5 Engine: The 2.5L TD5 diesel engine with electronic management brought better performance and reliability.

Improved Comfort: Full-sized, forward-facing third-row seats made it a true 7-seater.

Modern Tech for Its Time: Optional Active Cornering Enhancement (ACE), rear self-levelling air suspension, Hill Descent Control, and traction control.

Enhanced Interior: More sound insulation, updated dash layout, and improved build quality.

A Beloved Workhorse
The Discovery 2 was the last model built on a ladder-frame chassis with beam axles — a formula that off-roaders still swear by. It became a favourite among overlanders, adventurers, and rural users alike for its blend of simplicity and rugged dependability.

Whether pounding motorways or crawling through Welsh forestry tracks, the Disco 2 earned its place as a modern Land Rover icon.
