They consist of either solid or ventilated metal rotors attached to your wheels that provide a friction surface for the brake pads to squeeze on when the brake pedal is depressed. Brake discs should generally last for 2 or 3 sets of brake pads. Unfortunately, however, brake discs corrode or can become dented and warped.
