What is a Land Rover VIN number?
A VIN is the Vehicle Identification Number also known as a Chassis Number. It is a unique combination of 17 letters and numbers that identifies every vehicle ever manufactured. The VIN contains information that recognises the vehicle and its specification, much like a person's DNA!
Where to find your car's VIN number
The VIN number will be printed on the cars registration document or V5C logbook and can also be found in several places on the car, either on a sticker or plate attached to the vehicle or stamped into the chassis or bodywork:
Door frame or door post of the driver's door.
Dash near the windscreen
Radiator support or slam panel
Chassis near front-wheel or under the driver's door
Why is the VIN useful?
The VIN is used to identify:
Country of manufacture
Vehicle manufcaturer
Model, engine size and type
Model year
Assembly plant
Serial number
You will see throughout the JGS4x4 website that we mention parts are suitable for models up to VIN XXXXXXXX or from VIN XXXXXXXX. This relates to the last eight digits of the VIN to identify the year and serial number. This is important for some parts that changed during the production time of a vehicle model range.
There are several online VIN checkers that you can use by entering your car registration or VIN or you can use the information below to decode your VIN manually.
When you contact JGS4x4 regarding parts, we use the same software as the Land Rover main dealers, JLR Ecat, their version of their own ECP Electronic Parts Catalogue specific to Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles. The JLR Ecat or ECP has a database that can tell us a lot more information about a vehicle, including build specifications and technical information.

A Land Rover VIN Vehicle Identification Number will consist of 17 letters and numbers, for example: SALLDHMD7FA416172

The first 3 characters are the WMI World Manufacturer Identifier. For Land Rover's this is 'SAL' and corresponds to the Region 'S', the Country 'A' and the Manufacturer 'L'. For our example it is Europe, United Kingdom and Land Rover.

The 4th through to the 9th characters are the VDS Vehicle Descriptor Section that identify the vehicle's type and includes information to identify the platform, model, and body style. In our example it is a 4-door 110 2.5L petrol engined model.

The remaining characters 10 to 17 are the VIS Vehicle Identifier Section that are used by the vehicle manufacturer to identify each individual vehicle. Land Rover uses the 10th Character as the Model Year or MY and the 11th as the Plant Code or factory. The last 6 numbers in the VIN is a simple sequential number, a unique serial number.
