The exhaust gas recirculation or EGR valve on your Land Rover engine has the primary function of reducing the harmful Nitrous Oxide (NOx) emissions from your Land Rover's exhaust. The basic operation of the EGR valve is to recycle some of the exhaust gas back into the air intake to cool the combustion chamber by absorbing some heat in the combustion process. A faulty EGR system on a modern vehicle will bring on the engine management light. You will also notice a smoky exhaust when under hard acceleration too. Whilst it is possible to clean faulty EGR valves, replacement is often more cost-effective. A faulty EGR valve can also be an MOT failure.
